Verso settings on Mac
Appearance, layout, accessibility and the default app switch. All of it free, and all of it kept on your Mac.
Settings open with ⌘+, or from the Verso menu. There are not many of them, and none of them is a preference you have to find before the app is usable.
Every setting on this page is free and always will be. There is nothing to sign up for and nothing is watermarked.
Appearance
| Setting | What it does |
|---|---|
| Theme | Light, dark, or whatever your Mac is set to. The default follows the system. |
| Accent colour | The colour the app uses for selection, the active tool and the controls you are working with. It does not change anything in your documents. |
Reading
| Setting | What it does |
|---|---|
| Default page layout | Continuous scrolling, one page at a time, two pages side by side, or a book spread. Whatever you set here is how every document opens. |
| Default zoom | Fit the page, fit the width, or a fixed percentage. |
| Reading ruler | On or off by default. It can also be toggled per document from the inspector. |
The layout you choose becomes the default for everything you open, and any document can still be switched to something else while you have it open without changing the default.
Accessibility
Verso has its own switches for motion and transparency, separate from the system-wide ones. That matters because you may want a calm document app without changing how the rest of your Mac behaves.
| Setting | What it does |
|---|---|
| Reduce motion | Removes the transitions and animations the interface uses, so panels appear rather than slide. |
| Reduce transparency | Replaces the translucent sidebar and tool pill with solid surfaces, which raises contrast. |
The reading ruler, Reading View and Read Aloud are all free and all designed for the same problem: getting through a long document without losing your place. They are worth trying even if you would not normally look in an accessibility menu.
Documents
| Setting | What it does |
|---|---|
| Open PDFs in Verso by default | Makes a double-click in Finder land here. Reversible at any time. |
| Recent documents | How many documents the home screen remembers. Clearing the list removes the list, not the documents. |
| Snapshots | How many automatic restore points to keep per document. |
What settings are not
There is no account panel, because there is no account. There is no sync panel, because nothing syncs. There is no privacy panel with switches for what to collect, because nothing is collected and there is nothing to switch off. Settings are kept in the ordinary place macOS keeps an app's preferences, on your Mac, and go nowhere.
Replaying the tour
The short guided tour that runs the first time you open the app can be replayed at any point from the Help menu. It is six stages and takes about a minute.
Frequently asked questions
How do I open settings in Verso?
⌘+,, or the Verso menu at the left end of the menu bar — the standard place for any Mac app.
Does Verso have a dark mode?
Yes. Light, dark, or following whatever your Mac is set to. You can also choose the accent colour the interface uses.
Can I turn off the animations?
Yes, with Verso's own reduce-motion switch, which works independently of the system-wide setting. There is a matching switch for transparency, which raises contrast by making the sidebar and tool pill solid.
How do I set the page layout I always want?
Set it in Settings and every document opens that way. Any individual document can still be switched while you have it open without changing the default.
Where are my settings stored?
In the ordinary place macOS keeps an app's preferences, on your Mac. They are not synced, not uploaded, and not attached to any account — there is no account to attach them to.
Can I replay the introductory tour?
Yes, from the Help menu, whenever you like.
