How to make Verso your default PDF app on Mac

One switch makes Verso the app a double-click lands in. Nothing else about your Mac changes.

Every Mac has an app that opens PDFs when you double-click one, and until you say otherwise it is whatever the system picked. If you want that to be Verso, it takes one click.

Free, with no account

Setting the default app is free and always will be. There is nothing to sign up for and nothing is watermarked.

Set it, step by step

  1. Open Verso

The first time you run it, a short guided tour appears. Its last page offers to make Verso the app that opens your PDFs — click it and you are done.

  2. Or do it later, from settings

If you skipped the tour, open Verso ▸ Settings (⌘+,) and use the switch there. It reads back whether Verso is currently the default, so you always know where you stand.

  3. Check it

Double-click any PDF in Finder. It should open in Verso, in a tab, at the page you last had it on if you have opened it before.

What this actually changes

It changes one thing: which app macOS hands a PDF to when you double-click one. Nothing else is touched. Your files stay exactly where they are, no other file type is affected, and no other app is removed or disabled.

What setting the default app affects
ChangesDoes not change
Double-clicking a PDF in FinderWhere any of your files are stored
Opening a PDF from a downloadWhat happens with any other file type
The icon PDFs show in FinderAny other app installed on your Mac
Quick Look’s “Open with” defaultAnything about how a document is saved

Opening one document somewhere else, just this once

Setting a default does not lock you in. Right-click any PDF in Finder, choose Open With, and pick whatever you want for that one file. The default only decides what happens when you do not choose.

Changing your mind

The switch works in both directions, and you can flip it as often as you like. If you later want something else to be the default, set it from that app or from Finder's Get Info panel in the usual macOS way.

Why it is worth doing

The point is not saving a click. It is that everything else in this guide — reading where you left off, tabs, the reading ruler, markup, editing, redaction — is one double-click away instead of being somewhere you have to go and find.

Frequently asked questions

How do I change the default PDF app on a Mac?

Open Verso and use the switch in Settings, or accept the offer on the last page of the guided tour the first time you run the app. One click, and it works in both directions.

Does this move or change my files?

No. It changes which app macOS opens a PDF with and nothing else. Your documents stay exactly where they are and are not modified.

Can I still open one PDF in something else?

Yes. Right-click the file in Finder and choose Open With. The default only decides what happens when you double-click without choosing.

Will this affect other file types?

No. Only PDFs. Every other kind of file keeps whatever it already opens with.

How do I undo it?

Flip the same switch back, or set a different default from Finder's Get Info panel in the usual way. Nothing is permanent.

Do I have to be signed in to anything for this?

No. Verso has no account and no sign-in at all. There is nothing to create and nothing to log into.
