Privacy Policy
Verso collects no personal data of any kind. There is no account, no sign-in, no analytics and no server of ours that your documents reach. This policy explains exactly what that means, what stays on your Mac, and the one place a payment is handled by someone else.
1. The short version
Verso collects nothing. There is no account, no sign-in, no sync and no telemetry. The app contains no code that connects to a server of ours, because we do not operate one. Every document you open, every mark you make and every change you save stays in your Mac's own storage until you deliberately move it somewhere else.
Disconnect your Mac from the network and use Verso normally. Opening, reading, marking up, editing, recognising a scan, redacting, converting and exporting all continue to work, because none of them were ever going anywhere. The only thing that stops working is buying or restoring a purchase, which is Apple's transaction and not ours.
2. Who this policy applies to
This policy covers Verso for macOS and this website. It is written for everyone who uses either, and it applies wherever you live. Where local law gives you more than this policy describes, the local law wins.
3. Data we collect
None. To be specific, and in the categories the industry uses:
| Category | Collected? | Notes |
|---|---|---|
| Contact information | No | There is no account, so there is nothing to attach a name or address to. |
| Document content | No | Your PDFs are opened from and saved to your own storage. They are never transmitted. |
| Identifiers | No | No device identifier, advertising identifier or installation identifier is read or stored by us. |
| Usage data | No | No analytics, no feature telemetry, no session recording, no heat maps. |
| Diagnostics | No | No crash reporting service. If the app crashes, only Apple's own system reporting applies, subject to your Mac's settings. |
| Location | No | Never requested. |
| Contacts, photos, calendar | No | Never requested. |
| Purchase history | No | Apple processes purchases. We receive no personal data from it. |
4. What lives on your Mac and never leaves it
Verso stores its own settings — your appearance choice, accent colour, preferred page layout, accessibility switches, saved colour swatches, your recent documents list and where you had reached in each of them — in the ordinary place macOS keeps an app's preferences. Snapshots of documents you have been working on are kept in the app's own storage on your Mac.
None of that is transmitted anywhere. Removing the app removes its settings; your documents are unaffected, because Verso never moved them in the first place.
5. Documents you open, export and share
Verso asks macOS for permission to read or write a file at the moment you open or save one, and that is the extent of its reach into your Mac. When you export a document, convert it, compress it or share it, the result goes exactly where you tell it to go.
Once a file leaves Verso, it is governed by whatever you send it through. Email, a messaging app, a cloud drive or a colleague's laptop each have their own terms and their own privacy characteristics. Redaction and sanitize exist precisely so that you can decide what is in a document before it goes.
Sanitize clears the document's own information — author, title, keywords — along with comments and marks. Some documents also carry a second set of details written by whatever program created them, and sanitize does not currently reach that one. If you are sharing something where authorship absolutely must not be recoverable, check the file in another tool before you send it.
6. Text recognition and the assistant
Text recognition and the assistant both run on your Mac, using the facilities macOS itself provides. Your document is not sent to us, and it is not sent to a third-party service by us. The assistant uses Apple's on-device intelligence and is therefore available only on Macs where that is available; on any other Mac the feature is simply absent and nothing else changes.
7. What Apple may see, and we never do
Verso is distributed through the Mac App Store, and purchases are Apple transactions. Apple handles the payment, the receipt, the restore and any refund. Apple's own privacy policy governs what it collects in the course of that, and Apple may provide the developer with aggregate, anonymised sales and usage reports that cannot identify anyone.
Apple never sees your documents. Nothing about what you open, mark up, edit or export is part of a purchase.
8. No third-party services, no analytics, no advertising, no tracking
Verso embeds no analytics library, no advertising software development kit, no attribution framework, no A/B testing service and no crash reporting service. It does not participate in any advertising network and does not track you across apps or websites. There is no profile of you, because there is nowhere to keep one and nothing to put in it.
This website is the same: no cookies are set, no analytics run, no fonts or scripts are fetched from anywhere else, and there is no consent banner because there is nothing to consent to.
9. Privacy roles
Because we collect no personal data, we act as a controller of nothing. You are the controller of the documents you hold, and Verso is a tool you run on your own equipment rather than a service that processes data on your behalf. No data processing agreement is necessary, and there is no sub-processor list, because there are no sub-processors.
10. Children
Verso is a general-purpose document tool and is not directed at children. Since no personal data is collected from anyone, none is collected from children either.
11. International users
There is no international transfer of personal data, because there is no transfer of personal data. Your documents stay on your Mac regardless of where you or it happen to be.
12. Your rights, and how to exercise them
Privacy law gives you rights of access, correction, erasure, portability, restriction and objection over personal data a company holds about you. We hold none, so there is nothing for us to give you, correct, erase or export.
In practice you already have complete control: your documents are files in your own storage, which you can read, copy, move and delete with the tools your Mac already gives you. If you want to remove everything Verso keeps, delete the app and its preferences; your documents remain exactly where they were.
For anything relating to a purchase — a receipt, a refund, a subscription — Apple is the party that holds the record. You can reach us at verso@mahtca.com about anything else.
13. Security, and the honest limits of it
The strongest security property Verso has is architectural: a document that is never transmitted cannot be intercepted, and an account that does not exist cannot be breached. Verso runs inside the sandbox macOS gives every App Store app, and reaches only the files you open.
What Verso cannot do is protect a document from the machine it sits on. If your Mac is unencrypted and someone has physical access to it, your documents are as exposed as any other file. Turn on FileVault, use a strong login password, and use the password protection in Verso for copies that leave your hands.
14. Changes to this policy
If this policy changes, the version number and effective date at the top change with it, and the current version always lives at this address. Because the app collects nothing, any change is likely to be a clarification rather than a new practice. A change that ever introduced collection would be announced prominently and would not apply retroactively.
15. The App Privacy label
Verso's App Store privacy label declares Data Not Collected. That is the complete declaration, and this policy is its long form.
