How to convert a PDF to Word on Mac
The content back in an editable document — and in Verso the file never goes near a conversion service.
Sometimes editing the PDF is not the answer. If half the document is going to change, you want paragraphs that reflow, and that means getting the content into a word processor.
Exporting to Word is part of Premium, so it carries a small lock in the document actions panel and in the menu bar. The lock is a label rather than a barrier — you can open the feature and see what it does before deciding to unlock it. Reading and every page operation stay free.
Convert, step by step
-
Check the document has real text
Try selecting a line. If nothing highlights it is a scan, and converting it gives you a Word document containing one large picture per page. Run Make Searchable first.
-
Open Export
From the document actions panel, under Protect & Share, and choose Word.
-
Choose where it goes
The conversion runs on your Mac and writes the file wherever you point it.
-
Open the result and read it
Not skim — read it. Conversions are good and they are not perfect, and the errors are usually in tables, columns and anything set in an unusual way.
-
Fix the structure before the words
Apply proper heading styles, fix the lists, and remove any stray text boxes the conversion produced. Doing that first makes the rest of the editing far easier.
What survives, and what needs attention
| Usually fine | Usually needs work |
|---|---|
| Body text and its reading order | Complex tables, especially nested or merged cells |
| Basic formatting — bold, italic, size | Multi-column layouts, which may come across as text boxes |
| Simple tables | Headers and footers, which may become body text |
| Images, in roughly the right places | Footnotes and endnotes |
| Paragraph breaks | Mathematical notation and unusual symbols |
| Lists, mostly | Anything with a decorative or unusual typeface |
A conversion is a translation, not a copy. A PDF page holds marks in positions; a word processor document holds paragraphs that reflow. Getting from one to the other means interpreting the layout, and the more unusual the layout, the more interpretation is involved. Expect a very good result from a plain report and a rougher one from a magazine spread.
Converting a scan
A scanned page has no text, so there is nothing to convert. Run Make Searchable first and the recognised text converts along with everything else. The result will be rougher than a born-digital document — recognition produces text in positions rather than a structured layout — but it is a document you can edit rather than a picture you cannot.
When not to convert
- For a small correction. Editing the text in the PDF is faster and keeps the layout exactly as it was.
- For a document that is a record. A converted contract is a new document, not the one that was signed.
- For quoting a passage. Select and copy, or extract the text from a region.
- For data. If what you want is the numbers, converting to a spreadsheet keeps far more structure than converting to a document.
Why it matters that this runs locally
Converting a PDF is the second most common reason people upload a confidential document to a website. Contracts, medical letters, tax documents, HR files — all routinely put through a free online converter by someone who needed an editable version and had a deadline. The conversion here happens on your Mac; there is no upload, no account, and no copy on anyone's server.
Frequently asked questions
How do I convert a PDF to Word on a Mac?
Open Export in Verso, choose Word, and pick where the file goes. The conversion runs on your Mac.
Will the formatting survive?
Body text, basic formatting, images and simple tables come across well. Complex tables, multi-column layouts, headers and footers and footnotes usually need attention afterwards.
Can I convert a scanned PDF to Word?
Run Make Searchable over it first. Without recognition you get a Word document containing one large picture per page.
Is converting free?
Reading and page operations are free permanently. Export is part of Premium.
Does converting upload my document?
No. It happens on your Mac — which matters, because converting is one of the most common reasons confidential documents end up on a stranger's server.
Should I convert or edit the PDF directly?
Edit the PDF for a correction; it is faster and keeps the layout exactly. Convert when half the document is going to change and you want paragraphs that reflow.
