How to delete pages from a PDF on Mac
One page, a run of them, or every blank the scanner produced. Free.
Blank pages from a scanner, the fax cover sheet, the appendix that should not go to this recipient, the draft page that survived into the final. Deleting is free and takes seconds.
Deleting pages is free and always will be. There is nothing to sign up for and nothing is watermarked.
Delete pages, step by step
-
Find the pages
The thumbnail rail in the sidebar is enough for one or two. For a document that needs a proper clear-out, open Organize Pages and see the whole thing at once.
-
Select them
Click one, ⇧-click for a run, ⌘-click for scattered pages. Blank pages are unmistakable in a grid of thumbnails.
-
Delete
Press ⌫, or use Delete Pages from the document actions panel. Verso confirms before removing several at once.
-
Check what is left
Look through the remaining thumbnails before saving. Deleting the page after the one you meant is the classic mistake, and it is obvious in the grid.
-
Save
⌘+S. Nothing on disk changes until you do.
Delete or extract?
| You want | Use |
|---|---|
| The pages gone from this document | Delete |
| Those pages as a document of their own, original untouched | Extract |
| The document broken into several | Split |
| The content of a page gone but the page kept | Redact |
The last row is the one worth reading twice. If the problem is a sensitive paragraph rather than an unwanted page, deleting the page removes far more than you meant and leaves a visible gap in the pagination. Redaction removes the content and keeps the page.
Removing a page removes everything on it, including whatever else was there. And a document that jumps from page 7 to page 9 tells its reader that something was taken out, which may be precisely what you did not want to announce. For sensitive material, redact.
Working safely on a document that matters
- Take a snapshot first. A named restore point, kept on your Mac, costs a second.
- Work on a copy when the original is a record you may have to produce later.
- Check the whole document before saving, not just the pages you touched.
- Remember undo. ⌘+Z works throughout the session.
Clearing out a scan
Scanners produce blank pages whenever a sheet is single-sided in a double-sided batch. In a forty-page scan that can be twenty blanks. Organize Pages makes them obvious — twenty empty rectangles in a grid — and one selection removes all of them.
Frequently asked questions
How do I delete a page from a PDF on a Mac?
Select it in the thumbnail rail or in Organize Pages and press ⌫. It is free.
Can I delete several pages at once?
Yes — ⇧-click for a run, ⌘-click for scattered pages, then delete the whole selection.
How do I remove all the blank pages from a scan?
Open Organize Pages. Blanks are obvious in a grid of thumbnails; select them all and delete in one go.
Is deleting a page the same as redacting?
No. Deleting removes the whole page, including everything else on it, and leaves a gap in the pagination that tells the reader something was taken out. Redaction removes specific content and keeps the page.
Can I get a deleted page back?
Undo works within the session, and snapshots are restore points kept on your Mac. Once a document is saved and closed without either, the page is gone from that file.
