How to have a PDF read aloud on Mac

Hearing a sentence is the fastest way to catch the word you typed twice — and the easiest way through a long report.

Read Aloud speaks the document and highlights each word as it reaches it, so you can follow along on the page or put the page away entirely.

Free, with no account

Read Aloud is free and always will be. There is nothing to sign up for and nothing is watermarked.

Each word lights up as it is spoken, so the page and the voice stay together.

Starting it

  1. Open the document

Any document with real text. A scan has no words to read until recognition has been run over it.

  2. Start reading

The speaker control sits in the tool pill along the bottom of the window. Reading begins from the top of the page you are on.

  3. Set the speed

Faster for a report you are skimming, slower for something technical. The setting is remembered.

  4. Follow along, or do not

The word being spoken is highlighted on the page and the view keeps up with it. You can also just listen.

What it is genuinely good for

When Read Aloud earns its place
UseWhy it works
Proofreading your own writingYou read what you meant to write. You hear what you actually wrote — which is how you catch the word typed twice.
Getting through a long reportListening while doing something else covers ground that staring at a screen would not.
Checking a translation or a quotationHearing a sentence read back exactly as it is written catches transcription slips the eye skips.
Taking in text more easilyFor anyone who processes spoken text more readily than written text, this is not a convenience feature.

If nothing is read

The usual cause is the usual cause: the document is a scan, so there are no words in it. Run Make Searchable over it and Read Aloud will work from then on, along with search, selection and text editing.

The voice comes from your Mac

Read Aloud uses the speech your Mac already provides, which means nothing about your document is sent anywhere to be spoken. If you want a different voice or a different language, macOS's own spoken-content settings are where voices are chosen and downloaded.

Frequently asked questions

Can a Mac read a PDF out loud?

Yes. Verso reads the document and highlights each word as it goes, with playback controls and a speed you set. It is free.

Why is nothing being read?

Almost always because the document is a scan and contains no words yet. Run Make Searchable over it and Read Aloud will work.

Can I change the voice or the language?

Read Aloud uses the voices your Mac provides, so voices and languages are chosen and downloaded in macOS's own spoken-content settings.

Does the document get sent anywhere to be spoken?

No. The speech happens on your Mac. Nothing about the document leaves the machine.

Is Read Aloud free?

Yes, permanently, with no account.

Can I follow the text while it reads?

Each word is highlighted as it is spoken and the view keeps up, so the page and the voice stay together.
