How to split a PDF on Mac
Four ways to break a document up, including one that turns a bound report back into chapters in a single click.
Splitting is merging in reverse, and it has four modes because “split this” means four different things depending on the document.
Splitting is free and always will be. There is nothing to sign up for and nothing is watermarked.
The four ways to split
| Mode | What it does | Use when |
|---|---|---|
| Every N pages | Cuts the document into equal chunks | A long scan of uniform records — every two pages is one invoice |
| At page ranges | Produces exactly the pieces you name, such as 1–4, 5–20, 21–end | You know the structure and want specific sections |
| At bookmarks | Cuts at the document's own outline entries | A published report with a real table of contents — this turns it back into chapters in one step |
| Into single pages | One file per page | You need every page separately, for filing or for sending individually |
Split, step by step
-
Open Split PDF
From the document actions panel, under Pages.
-
Choose the mode
Whichever of the four matches what you are actually trying to produce. Check the outline pane first — if the document has one, splitting at bookmarks is almost always the answer.
-
Set the detail
The number of pages, the ranges, or nothing at all for bookmarks and single pages.
-
Choose where the results go
A folder of your choosing. The original document is not modified.
-
Split
The pieces are written out, named after the source document.
If the outline pane in the sidebar shows a list of sections, the document carries real structure and splitting at bookmarks will produce sensible pieces with sensible names. It is much better than guessing page ranges, and it takes one click.
Split, or extract?
They sound similar and are not.
- Splitting divides the whole document into pieces. Everything ends up somewhere.
- Extracting takes the pages you asked for into a new document and leaves the original alone. Everything else stays where it was.
“I need four pages out of a forty-page report” is extraction. “I need this report as its six chapters” is splitting.
A folder of documents at once
Splitting one document is a menu command. Splitting sixty scanned batches, each holding twelve two-page records, is a batch recipe — set the job up once and run it across the folder.
Frequently asked questions
How do I split a PDF on a Mac?
Open Split PDF from the document actions panel and choose one of the four modes: every N pages, at ranges you name, at the document's own bookmarks, or into single pages.
Can I split a PDF by chapter?
Yes, if the document carries an outline. Splitting at bookmarks cuts at its own section boundaries, which turns a bound report back into chapters in one step.
Is splitting free?
Yes, permanently, with nothing watermarked.
What is the difference between splitting and extracting?
Splitting divides the whole document into pieces. Extracting takes the pages you asked for into a new document and leaves the original unchanged.
Does splitting change the original?
No. The pieces are written out to a folder you choose; the document you opened is untouched.
Can I split a lot of documents at once?
Yes, with a batch recipe across a folder.
