How to sign a PDF on Mac
No printing, no scanning, and no sending the contract to a service first. Verso signs on your Mac.
Signing used to mean printing a contract, signing it, scanning it crookedly and emailing back something grey and slightly illegible. It has not needed to for years.
Signing is part of Premium, so it carries a small lock in the document actions panel and in the menu bar. The lock is a label rather than a barrier — you can open the feature and see what it does before deciding to unlock it. Reading and every page operation stay free.
Sign, step by step
-
Read it first
Obvious, and worth saying. The reading ruler is free and exists for exactly this kind of document.
-
Open Sign
From the document actions panel, under Content.
-
Create your signature, once
Draw it with the trackpad, or use a photograph of a signature on white paper. Once it exists you reuse it rather than redrawing it every time.
-
Place it
Click where it belongs and drag to size it. Signatures usually want to be a little smaller than people first make them — roughly the height of two lines of the surrounding text looks right.
-
Add the date if the document asks for one
A text box, or a form field if the document has one.
-
Save, and consider flattening
Flattening fixes the signature into the page so it cannot be dragged off by whoever receives the document. Keep the unflattened copy for yourself.
Getting a signature that looks like yours
A signature drawn with a trackpad usually looks like a signature drawn with a trackpad. Two better routes:
- Photograph a real one. Sign a clean sheet of white paper with a dark pen, photograph it square-on in good light, and use the image. This looks the most like your actual signature because it is.
- Use a drawing tablet or a stylus if you have one. Far more control than a trackpad.
Placing a signature image on a page is an electronic signature, and for the enormous majority of everyday agreements that is exactly what is wanted and expected. It is not a cryptographic digital signature, which is a different thing that proves mathematically who signed and that nothing has changed since. If a document specifically requires a qualified or certificate-based signature, it will say so, and you will have been given a certificate to use.
Sensible practice
| Do | Because |
|---|---|
| Flatten the signed copy before sending | An unflattened signature is an object the recipient can move, resize or delete. |
| Keep the unflattened original | Flattened pages cannot be edited, and you may need to correct something. |
| Sign the final version | Signing a draft and then updating the document leaves a signature attached to something you did not agree to. |
| Do not email your bare signature image | A signature on its own is worth more to the wrong person than a signed document. |
| Check every page for signature blocks | Multi-page agreements often want initials on each page as well as a signature at the end. |
Stamps, for the times a name is not what is needed
“Approved”, “Draft”, “Confidential”, “Received” — these are stamps rather than signatures, and Verso has a library of them. They place the same way and are the right mark when the document needs a status rather than a person.
Why the privacy point is sharper here
Signing services work by receiving your document, storing it, and keeping a record of the transaction. For a routine agreement that may be acceptable. For a settlement, a diagnosis, a licence application or anything under a professional duty of confidence, sending the document to a third party in order to sign it is the problem, not the solution. Here the document never leaves your Mac.
Frequently asked questions
How do I sign a PDF on a Mac?
Open Sign in Verso, create your signature once by drawing it or using a photograph of a real one, then click where it belongs and size it. Nothing is uploaded.
Is an electronic signature legally valid?
Electronic signatures are widely accepted for everyday agreements in most jurisdictions. Some documents specifically require a certificate-based digital signature, and those say so. If a particular agreement matters, take advice rather than guessing.
How do I make my signature look real?
Sign a clean sheet of white paper with a dark pen, photograph it square-on in good light, and use that image. A trackpad signature always looks like a trackpad signature.
Can someone remove my signature after I send the document?
From an unflattened document, yes — it is an object on the page. Flatten the signed copy before sending and it becomes part of the page.
Do I need an account to sign a PDF?
No. There is no account in Verso at all, and the document is never sent anywhere.
How do I add a date next to my signature?
A text box, or a form field if the document has one designed for it.
